Project Scope:

This gorgeous landscape project in beautiful McAllister, MT began by replacing an existing, hard to maintain landscape. The owners wanted to enjoy the beauty of the mountains around their property without having to maintain large beds. Wagner and Company created small beds with large native plants and an efficient irrigation system to wrap around the house.

Another request from the owners was to create a large grass area that flowed into the pond. Wagner and company was able to accomplish this by laying beautiful, cool season Bluegrass sod throughout most of the property. When the owners go out to sit on their front porch, there is an endless view of green grass that flows from the pond to the surrounding trees and mountains.

Project Scope:

Owners were looking to create a modern, outdoor landscape to match their modern Big Sky home for their family and guests enjoy the outdoors. Wagner and Company replaced an existing retaining wall with Montana native stone to provide retaining and drainage. The wall was completed with beautiful Montana native plants to provide color and depth.

A modern Belgard tile patio was designed and created by Wagner and Company Landscape. This patio provides both an easily maintained, sustainable outdoor living space. The patio was enhanced with a modern, outdoor glass firepit to enjoy the cool Montana skies.

Location: Pony, MT

Key Objectives:

• Create a circle driveway to the front door
• Make a beach on the shoreline

Project Scope:

This large project had very specific challenges to accomplish the very specific goals of the owners. In order to install a circle driveway, Wagner and Co. first had to excavate and retain a hillside that was too close to the buildings to begin with. Moss rock boulders were used to retain the hill and trees and shrubs offer color and habitat. An asphalt driveway with concrete edges allow snow to be removed without pushing gravel into the plant beds that surround it.

A large grass area allows grandchildren to play beside the beautiful ponds and waterfalls that can be seen all over the property. A pathway from the house leads guests to an area next to the pond. A large patio and bench wall encompasses a custom built fire pit to allow visitors to have a place to watch others as they play in the water and on the sand beach.

This property had many challenges to incorporate into a beautiful landscape, all while preserving the view of the beautiful Tobacco Root Mountains. As you can see…the project found great success.

Key Objectives:

Residents of this unique property spent a lot of effort remodeling this beautiful home. Turning their focus to the yard, they looked to Wagner & Co. for help. Key points of this project include:

• Embankment retaining against the river
• A large patio to gather with family and guests.
• A beautiful, efficient, practical landscape

Project Scope:

Dusty and Bob began first retaining the river embankment with decorative moss rock boulders. This allwed the patio area more space and provided a more natural planting bed for flowers and sedum.

Belgard pavers were selected for their rustic appearance and perfect blending of material. A walkway connects the art studio to the main house. The size of the patio reflects careful consideration for the size of gatherings.

The entire yards was then prepped with compost, worked into the soil. By utilizing this ancient practice, the residents will reduce their outdoor watering needs by two-thirds, a necessity when on a water meter.

Natural mulch and premium bluegrass sod provide guests a great place to enjoy a Montana summer, while the smell of wildflowers fill the air.

Project Scope:

This project is very unique. The owners had a large list of needs and objectives to meet. First was to design the entertainment area. A raised fire pit with sitting area provided warmth during the cool Montana evening and also a place to cook camp fire food. A large paver patio matches the home and encompasses an area to gather and entertain. A large lawn surrounds the home using its natural cooling power to decrease the outside temperature. Large trees also shade the home on the southern exposure, while also blocking the views of neighbors. The design of the plant beds seclude the backyard, making the area private

The entire site received amendment to reduce water and fertilizer needs. A sprinkler system was installed using low pressure, low volume heads to further reduce water usage. All plants are watered by a drip system, giving plants the specific amount of water needed to survive.

A large Maple tree casts the perfect amount of shade in the late afternoon, protecting guests from the hot sun. A premium grade sports turf will provide the property with many years of service without showing wear from backyard sporting events.

Project Scope:

When our clients called Wagner and Company to assess the many problems on this property, they were overwhelmed and could not find anyone to maintain this property. Previously they had hired a person for the entire summer to do nothing but pull weeds and they could not keep up with the extreme amount of maintenance. Upon an extensive evaluation a recommendation was made to reduce maintenance and watering. The extensive plant beds consisted of a fine bark mulch with a weed barrier underneath it. With a large amount of labor, all of the weed barrier was removed. After the first year of original construction the weeds had attached to the barrier, disallowing the weed roots to be removed.

Drip irrigation was re-organized and directed to each plant for the appropriate amount of water. Many of the shrubs had been planted in places that forced the plants to struggle. Mostly due to sunlight and soil conditions. Wagner and Company transplanted many plants to new areas to place them in an environment that allows the plants to thrive.

The lawn also posed many problems. Poor drainage, improper grading, lack of soil amendment, and poor irrigation design was what they were up against. At the owner’s request, Wagner and Company started retro- fitting the system with appropriate nozzles. Ninety percent of the watering system was improved to a noticeable difference and satisfactory results. Over the next year, the lawn will be top dressed with a high grade compost to further reduce watering and improve soil retention.

The front walk also had construction issues. Its uneven surface rendered the surface unusable by most guests. The old stone walk was removed and a new surface of pavers resembling stone took place of the old walk. It is now the primary walkway to the home.

Wagner and Company’s commitment to the new clients included a plan to maintain the property one day a week to achieve a beautiful, manicured yard.

Project Scope:

Wagner and Co. needed to provide stone and masonry work to match the main house, complete with slab benches around deck area. Moss rock retaining added in front of the deck gave the appearance the home was built on an outcropping, without disturbing the natural landscape of the area around it. A fireplace was set with matching stone and benches to enjoy the evening view of the property. A manageable lawn adds an area for kids and adults to play and congregate.

Native plants blend the area back into the surrounding mountain landscape, making the home inviting and attractive. Both homes are connected using stone step paths and ornamental boulders. A mix of native grass and wildflowers surround the landscape with lots of color.

Key Objectives:

The homeowners in this remodel wanted to change both the location and current configuration of their deck space. They also envisioned adding other outdoor amenities that would provide entertainment space, privacy from a nearby home, as well as visual appeal.

The challenge we faced was removing the old decking, replacing and reconfiguring it so that it would blend seamlessly with the existing architecture. Natural stone sitting walls provided seating for guests and complemented the mahogany decks. In addition, we had to take into consideration the surrounding environment in developing a privacy wall that would blend in easily. Additional hardscape amenities such as moss rocks and native shrubbery were added for functionality and visual appeal. Adding bluegrass sod finished the look and tied all the hardscape and landscape elements together.

Project Scope:

Wagner & Company recommended the following:

• The original redwood deck be torn off and replaced with a newly designed mahogany wood deck.
• The deck was complemented by natural stone sitting walls, giving added sitting space for guests.
• A privacy wall, designed to resemble a mountain silhouette, was added; giving the hot tub seclusion from the adjacent house.
• Native shrubbery and over a dozen Blue Spruce trees were added to the landscape.
• Moss rocks were added to act as a retaining foundation and anchor the overall visual look and feel (Several of the rocks/boulders exceeded 12,000lbs and were put into place with a crane).
• To finish the project we added several small areas of Bluegrass sod.

The project from start-to-finish took two months.

Phase II

Homeowner wanted to add a few new amenities to the property – bridge over a small stream to gain access to additional acres for walking, ATV riding, etc. and wanted constructing a fire pit and sitting area for cool spring/fall evenings.

Fire Pit – we built the fire pit and laid stone for a comfortable and level sitting area.

Bridge – we designed and built this bridge over a small stream. We then cleared smaller and dead timber from the property. Using the wood chips to build the walkways or trails for additional land usage.
